cranes at sunset

Another shot of our iconic shipping cranes.  Sometimes we get a clear sunset with no fog creeping over the hills from the coast line.

the new, new Parkway Theater

The New Parkway, a theater for second run movies, has recently opened in the Uptown area.  Folks are happy to have them back since they had to close their original space in 2009.  They continue to have family night where babies are welcome.  Apparently you can also decided how much to pay for your ticket.  That should be an interesting experiment.

Monday Mural: night fox

Three weeks ago I showed you part of a large mural that was going up on a warehouse/work space on E.12th Street and Fruitvale Avenue.  The project now seems completed and is a vast collaboration between Doty and Polka that covers (I'm guessing) 200 running feet of corrugated wall.  This beautiful patchwork fox takes center stage on the tallest wall of the complex.  In the coming week's I'll share other parts of the wall and revisit the finished fox originally shown.

fun and funky vintage car

Someone is working on a vintage car.  I have no idea of the make.  But I bet Louis La Vache will tell us.  The car seems fantastic, fun, and now a little funky.  Hope they have all the parts.  Linked to ABC Wednesday.

Monday Mural: we're in this boat together

Found at 48th Street and Telegraph Avenue.  Painted by Chris Granillo who I believe also painted this mural.   It's the familiar bees that caught my eye.   He seems to prefer working with a limited color palette.

the dragons

Here's a close-up of the dragons on the dragon boats.  Fierce, no?  I think it's pretty funny that their beards drag in the water.

dragon boat races

Last weekend was the dragon boat races on Lake Merritt.  The winners of this competition are going to Ravenna, Italy for the international finals.  I had no idea dragon boat racing was so popular here, let alone other places in the world.  Linking to Skywatch Friday.  We start out with cloudy mornings, the sun finally burns through, and then the day is warm.  Warm is good.

Monday Mural: California Quail

The quail is the state bird and the poppy the state flower.  The mural can be found at MacArthur and 108th Avenue close to the San Leandro border.  It was created in 2011 as a collaboration between several people and agencies.  The primary artists are Dan Fontes and Caroline Stern who were recruited by the methadone clinic whose wall carries this mural.  Fontes has previously been featured here and here.  This neighborhood has more than its share of crime and blight.  Although the wall has several tags, none are written on the mural.  A recent newspaper article indicates that the mural is valued by the local community and is a bright spot in a beleaguered neighborhood.

D is for deely-boppers

Technically, the flags should be on bouncing springs to properly be called a deely-bopper.  But we can be forgiven this slight variation, can't we?  Spotted at the Love our Lake festival in July.  Linked to ABC Wednesday.

Monday Mural: time to quit smoking

Here's more of the huge mural that is being created on the sawtooth building on San Leandro Blvd. in the Fruitvale District.  I think this sad sack fox is another work by Cannon Dill.  If I'm wrong someone will correct me.  What can I say--it's my cup of tea.

The old Parkway Theater

The old Parkway Theater on Park Blvd. was a popular place for second run movies.  It was known for cheap tickets, casual seating using sofas and loveseats, pizzas and beer, and family night for families with small children and infants.  The story I heard is that the landlord raised the rent, the theater couldn't afford it, and the operation shut down.  The theater has been empty since 2009.  A new Parkway later opened in a neighboring town and now the new, new Parkway has just opened in Oakland's Uptown area.  Sofas and loveseats--check.  Pizza and beer--check.  You decide how much to pay for the tickets--whoa!

Theme Day: street lamps

I'm a little late to the party.  The first of each month, City Daily Photo sponsors a theme, this month's being street lamps.  These examples are at Jack London Square, which is predominately a pedestrian walk way along the estuary.
